Neuron Online Talk: What effect does the microbiome have on our health?

The subject of the microbiome, of healthy guts and their influence on the immune system, mood and behaviour now runs through scientific, medical and public debate alike. But how do you find your way through a flood of often contradictory information? We will discuss it with experts on Tuesday 19 November from 5 p.m. on the Neuron Foundation's YouTube channel.

Recording of the debate:

What will we be answering?

  • Why is the microbiome a trending topic?
  • What is the microbiome and how does it regulate our health?
  • What effect does the microbiome have on the immune system and on the development of chronic inflammation?
  • Medicine today: are there really reliable tests to examine your personal microbiome and where can you have them done? Modern approaches — how they can help with specific health problems.
  • How do you "feed" your microbiome properly?
  • What role do the microbiomes in other parts of the body play in our health?

Who will be taking part?

Prof. Helena Tlaskalová-Hogenová

An immunologist working at the Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences; she also lectures at the First Faculty of Medicine. Her research focuses above all on mucosal immunity, the immunopathology of the gut and the role of the microbiota in the development of disease.

Mgr. Martin Schwarzer, PhD.

A molecular biologist and Neuron Award laureate. He and his team were the first to show that gut bacteria are essential for optimal growth at an early age.

MUDr. Jiří Vejmelka

An internist and a member of the committee of the Czech Microbiotic Society. He works on functional diseases of the digestive tract and on the influence of the microbiota on human disease.

Prof. Jakub Abramson, PhD.

An immunologist working at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. He researches the thymus and autoimmune diseases.

Mgr. Lucie Najmanová, PhD.

She works at the Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences and is vice-chair of the Czech Microbiome Society. Her work includes the oral microbiome and the connection between oral dysbiosis and the development of periodontitis and other non-communicable diseases of civilisation.

The discussion will be moderated by Monika Vondráková, director and co-founder of the Neuron Foundation, and Jaroslav Řasa, co-founder and board member.

Thank you also to the Czech Microbiome Society.
