Neuron Online Club: Why is energy so expensive?
An invitation to an exclusive online discussion with scientists and experts.

Gas, electricity, oil. Why have their prices risen so sharply and become a social problem? How is energy actually obtained in the 21st century and what makes up its final price? And what role do the Green Deal, emission allowances or the carmaker Tesla play in it? When did humanity begin using energy, why does it need it and when will we find a new source? Is the struggle for energy part of the development of every society, or a reason for its disintegration?

The panellists:
Filip Matějka
Economist, guarantor of the Neuron Foundation's scientific council for the social sciences, laureate of the Neuron Award for young scientists. He studies mainly macroeconomics, economic theory and the economics of information, and uses economic theory to explain the behaviour of people and of the state. He is a researcher at the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and a member of the academic staff of CERGE-EI.
Jakub Rákosník
Historian, laureate of the Neuron Award for young scientists in the social sciences. He specialises in the economic and social history of the 19th and 20th centuries. He works at the Institute of Economic and Social History of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University.
Václav Bartuška
Energy expert and diplomat, the Czech Republic's ambassador-at-large for energy security. He was one of the leaders of the Velvet Revolution, worked as a journalist and served as the government's special envoy for completing the Temelín nuclear power plant.
Tomáš Slanina
Chemist and group leader at the IOCB of the Czech Academy of Sciences. His research explores ways of stabilising fluctuating solar energy production and of storing the energy obtained efficiently. He has just won a prestigious ERC Grant for his work.
Dana Drábová
Nuclear physicist and chair of the State Office for Nuclear Safety. She studied at the Czech Technical University and worked at the Centre for Radiation Hygiene, at the headquarters of the radiation monitoring network and at the National Radiation Protection Institute.
Jan Fousek
Energy specialist and entrepreneur, executive director of the Energy Storage Association AKU-BAT. He is chair of the board of the Solar Association and a board member of the Union of Modern Energy.
The debate is hosted by Monika Vondráková, chair of the board of the Neuron Foundation, and Prof. Jan Konvalinka, chair of the Neuron Foundation's scientific council.
