Neuron has an international scientific board

Top scientists from all over the world have accepted an invitation to become members of the International Scientific Board of the Neuron Endowment Fund. The members of this board also include Czech scientists living abroad, such as the doctors Bohdan Pomahač and Josef Stehlík and the physicist Petr Hořava.

This year the finalists of the Neuron Award for a significant scientific discovery and of the Neuron Award for lifelong contribution to science will be selected by the International Scientific Board. This board is made up of top world scientists for each field the Neuron Endowment Fund supports.

"Involving world scientific authorities through the international scientific board in the selection of the Neuron Award laureates means not only prestige but also guarantees independence in assessing the candidates," explains the head of the scientific board prof. Pavel Hobza. "We are proud that top scientists from abroad are working with a Czech endowment fund," he adds.

In the field of biology it is the holder of the Order of the British Empire Patricia Anne Nuttall (United Kingdom), a specialist in tick-borne diseases; Erik de Clercq (Belgium), a pioneer in the area of antivirals and of a new system of treating HIV; and the professor of neuroscience John G. Hildebrand (USA).

In the field of computer science it is the professors of theoretical computer science Javier Esparza (Spain), Martin Wirsing (Germany) and Josef Kittler (United Kingdom).

In the field of physics, the quantum optics specialist Rainer Blatt (Germany), the Czech-born researcher at the Center for Theoretical Physics in Berkeley Petr Hořava, and the specialist in nanostructures and discoverer of single-atom magnets Harald Brune (Germany).

In the field of chemistry, Tim Clark (United Kingdom), who works on molecular modelling, and Yury Gogotsi (Ukraine), who studies carbon nanostructures. In mathematics, the professors Roger Wiegand (USA), Jean Mawhin (Belgium) and Alexander A. Voronov (Russia).

Medicine is represented by two people of Czech origin: Josef Stehlík, a specialist in heart and lung transplants working at the University of Utah and a laureate of the Neuron Award for lifelong contribution to science, and the transplant specialist Bohdan Pomahač.

The social sciences are represented by the environmental historian and Egyptologist Linda Evans (Australia), the expert on modern Latin American history, especially in the area of the military and conflict, José Manuel Serrano Alvarez (Spain), and Thomas Evan Levy, who works on the archaeology of ancient Israel.
