Guarantor of the scientific board for computer science

Professor Matas works at the Center for Machine Perception of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague. His research interests include computer vision, recognition, machine learning and sequential decision-making.

He has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences. His h-index is 29 according to the Thomson-Reuters Web of Science and 58 according to Google Scholar.

He received the best paper award at the British Machine Vision Conference in 2002 and 2005, at the Asian Conference on Computer Vision in 2007, at the Scandinavian Conference on Image Analysis and at the Image and Vision Computing New Zealand Conference in 2013, and at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition in 2015. His students win numerous honours, among them Best Student Paper at ICDAR 2013, a Google Fellowship in 2013 and various awards for the best dissertation.

He is a co-founder of Eyedea Recognition, the first spin-off company at the Czech Technical University. He is the co-author of several patents. He has led projects for a number of high-tech companies such as Toyota, Hitachi, Boeing and Samsung, bringing the university tens of millions of crowns in total.

Professor Matas has held various positions at major international conferences (ICCV, CVPR, ICPR, NIPS and ECCV among them); he was one of the programme committee chairs at ECCV 2004 and 2016 and at CVPR 2007. He sits on the editorial board of the International Journal of Computer Vision and was deputy editor-in-chief of the field's most important journal, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He was a member of a Czech Science Foundation panel and has reviewed projects for the grant agencies of Sweden, Switzerland and Hong Kong. He was vice-chair of the ERC's computer science panel.

Since 2017 he has been the guarantor of the NF Neuron Scientific Board for the new field of computer science.
