Neuron Awards 2018

In the presence of patrons and distinguished guests from cultural, public and media life, on 3 December we presented ten awards to the best Czech scientists in seven fields at the Profesní dům. The Neuron Award for Contribution to World Science went to the biologist Prof. Jan Klein; we presented three awards for a major scientific discovery and seven awards for young promising scientists. The evening was hosted by the presenter Světlana Witovská and the actor Martin Myšička.

    Neuron Award for Major Scientific Discovery 2018 – biology He studies the migration of plants and animals and its consequences for the environment, the economy and human health.

    Neuron Award for Major Scientific Discovery 2018 – computer science Tomáš Mikolov is a major figure in artificial intelligence. His language models teach computers to process human speech.

  • prof. Tomáš Jungwirth, Ph.D.

    Neuron Award for Major Scientific Discovery 2018 – physics He found that antiferromagnets allow data to be written up to a thousand times faster than ordinary storage media.

    Neuron Award for Young Promising Scientists 2018 – social sciences His research deals with strengthening judicial self-government and with the impact of those reforms on the separation of powers.

  • RNDr. Filip Kolář, Ph.D.

    Biology

    RNDr. Filip Kolář, Ph.D.

    Neuron Award for Young Promising Scientists 2018 – biology He has long worked on plant evolution. He studies how plants in the wild adapt to a changing environment by doubling their DNA content.
